Frequently Asked Questions > General > I have my Living Will and Healthcare Power stored on the Internet. It is at a secure, password-protected site. Isn’t that as good or better than Medical Directive Online's service?

Again, remember the purpose of these documents – you are in a situation where you cannot communicate your healthcare instructions, the location of your documents or your password. If you’ve given your password to a trusted friend or relative, you have to count on the treatment facility knowing who they are and locating them. And, you have to count on your designated representative remembering the password.

Medical Directives Online (MDOL) is a secure site and is password protected where it makes sense to do so. A password is required should you need to update your contact information (including the contact information for your primary physician and your designated healthcare agents). It is also required for you to add, replace or delete your healthcare documents.

However, Living Wills and Healthcare Powers are different than regular wills and powers of attorney. They are not meant to be private documents. They are meant to be easily accessible. In time of need, it is important that medical providers and your healthcare agents can access them. They do not contain any information on your current health situation. And you shouldn’t store these documents on a site co-mingled with wills, medical records or financial documents that should be kept private where providing a password for your medical directives could unintentionally give people access to your other private information.

Medical providers can usually find your social security number. By requiring both the last name and social security number for access, we make it difficult for unrelated parties to gain access to your documents, but make it easy for those who need them.

In case the social security number is unavailable, we also provide access to your documents based on the combination of your last name and your MDOL ID #. We provide an ID Card for your wallet and labels for your Insurance Card and Drivers License (or other ID Card). These alert Medical providers to access our site to obtain copies of your medical directives.
